Powell Says Trump Administration Threatened Criminal Charges Over Fed Policy

Fed Chair Jerome Powell says the Trump administration has threatened him with a criminal indictment, calling it a “pretext” to pressure the Federal Reserve over interest rate policy.

According to Powell, the U.S. Department of Justice issued grand jury subpoenas related to his congressional testimony about a $2.5 billion Federal Reserve building renovation. Powell says the legal threat has nothing to do with the renovation and everything to do with the Fed’s refusal to cut interest rates under political pressure.

“This unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of ongoing threats to influence monetary policy,” Powell said, warning that central bank independence is under attack.
