Uganda's Potential Ban on Decentralized Messaging App Raises Concerns

According to Cointelegraph, Uganda's threat to shut down Jack Dorsey's decentralized messaging app, Bitchat, has been met with skepticism by one of its developers. The Uganda Communications Commission's executive director, Nyombi Thembo, announced on Monday that his team possesses the technical capability to disable Bitchat. The app utilizes Bluetooth mesh networks, allowing encrypted communication without internet access.Bitchat experienced a surge in downloads last week after opposition leader Bobi Wine encouraged Ugandans to install the app as a precaution against potential government internet shutdowns, a tactic used in previous elections. Thembo expressed confidence in his team's expertise, stating, "We know how it can be made not to work," and downplayed the app's significance by calling it "a small thing." Data from Calle revealed that over 400,000 Ugandans have already downloaded Bitchat. Calle responded defiantly on X, asserting, "You can't stop Bitchat. You can't stop us," and encouraged Ugandan developers to engage in open-source projects, emphasizing the app's free and open-source nature.Uganda has a history of internet shutdowns during elections, as seen in 2016 when President Yoweri Museveni imposed a nationwide block on internet and social media access, citing security concerns. A similar scenario occurred in 2021 with a four-day internet blackout starting on election night. Bitchat's decentralized structure, lacking central servers, accounts, email addresses, or phone numbers, makes it a viable option for communication during such blackouts.Globally, Bitchat has gained traction in various regions facing internet restrictions. In September, nearly 50,000 Nepalese users downloaded the app to bypass a brief social media ban amid corruption protests. Madagascar experienced a similar increase in downloads for comparable reasons three weeks later. In November, Bitchat became the second-most downloaded app on the Apple App Store in Jamaica during Hurricane Melissa, providing crucial communication for many of the country's 2.8 million residents as internet access was disrupted.

Telegram's Strategic Growth Amid Financial Challenges

According to PANews, Telegram currently employs fewer than 100 full-time staff despite having a user base of 1 billion. The company maintains a streamlined operational model. In the first half of 2025, Telegram's revenue reached $870 million, marking a growth of over 65% compared to the previous year. Approximately one-third of this revenue, around $300 million, was generated through exclusive agreements related to Toncoin. Advertising revenue amounted to $125 million, while paid subscription income rose by 88% to $223 million. The Role of Storytelling in Making Web3 Accessible

According to Foresight News, the challenges faced by Web3 are not due to a lack of creativity but rather its inability to resonate with the general public. The current narrative surrounding Web3 is filled with abstract concepts like public chains, infrastructure, and protocols, which lack a human touch, making it difficult for ordinary people to connect. In other fields, people naturally relate to familiar contexts. For instance, discussing food can evoke appetite, fitness can conjure images of progress, and travel can bring to mind scenic destinations. However, Web3 struggles to achieve this connection. Creators and project leaders often find themselves explaining complex systems and processes that remain invisible and intangible to most people. The importance of storytelling in Web3 cannot be overstated. While creators and project leaders are eager to explain how things work, they often overlook the need to describe the emotions these innovations evoke. Emotions such as confusion, laughter, relief, and vulnerability are absent from Web3 narratives. To engage audiences, it is crucial to focus on user experiences rather than just listing functionalities. For example, instead of stating that a feature enhances scalability by optimizing throughput, a more relatable approach would be to describe the user experience of refreshing a page and finding a transaction already completed. Storytelling is not about diminishing the importance of technology but about preparing the audience to receive complex information. By presenting complex concepts through relatable scenarios, audiences can better understand their relevance. In practice, storytelling has proven effective in Web3 content creation. Videos that focus on human moments rather than technical explanations tend to perform better in competitions. By highlighting relatable experiences, such as the initial confusion when using a product or the clarity achieved after understanding a feature, audiences are more engaged and comprehend the content more quickly. Ultimately, the success of Web3 storytelling lies in making complex concepts relatable and emotionally resonant, allowing audiences to connect with the technology on a personal level.
