⛓️The Mathematical Bedrock of Bitcoin
Bitcoin was designed to be “trustless”: no banks, no middlemen, only math. That math is elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), specifically the secp256k1 curve.
A private key is your secret a randomly chosen 256-bit number.

Not every Bitcoin address is equally vulnerable. The threat depends on whether your public key is visible.
Safe until spent: If your coins sit in an unused address, only the hashed public key is visible.Exposed after spending: Once you broadcast a transaction, your public key is revealed. The funds still sitting there become vulnerable.
High-risk targets:
Reused addresses (common in Bitcoin’s early days)
Multisignature wallets with exposed scripts
Dormant “whale” coins from the Satoshi era
Mining is less urgent. SHA-256, the hashing algorithm securing proof-of-work, is only moderately weakened by Grover’s algorithm. Miners could adapt by increasing difficulty. The bigger danger lies in key theft, not broken mining.

Quantum computers today are in the NISQ era (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum). They have hundreds of unstable qubits, riddled with errors. Breaking Bitcoin would require millions of error-corrected qubits, something well beyond current machines.

10–15 years — pessimists warn breakthroughs could arrive sooner than expected.20–30 years — optimists argue error correction and scaling are still major roadblocks.
Unknown window classified government research may be further ahead than public estimates suggest.
