Grayscale's launch opens regulated access to TAO
Grayscale has stated that the Trust allows investors to gain exposure to TAO, the native token of Bittensor, through a traditional securities structure, without the need to directly buy or hold the asset.
The quotes of the Trust are traded over-the-counter on the OTC Markets under the ticker Grayscale Bittensor Trust (GTAO).
According to Grayscale, the GTAO aims to replicate the market price of TAO using the Coin Metrics Real-Time Bittensor Reference Rate, net of fees and expenses.
As of January 5, the Trust reported a total expense ratio of 2.5% and a net asset value of $7.96 per share.
The launch comes following a series of changes within the Bittensor ecosystem. In mid-December, the network completed its first halving event, reducing daily TAO emissions by approximately 50%.
This move has reduced inflation and introduced tighter supply dynamics. In this way, Bittensor's structure has become comparable to Bitcoin in terms of scarcity.
Separately, Grayscale has already filed with U.S. regulators to convert its Bittensor Trust into a spot ETF. This initiative is part of Grayscale Investments' broader plan to expand regulated crypto exposure beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Although approval timelines remain uncertain, the demand has strengthened the narrative around TAO's institutional accessibility.
Bittensor operates as a decentralized marketplace for artificial intelligence, where contributors earn TAO by providing computing power and AI services to the network.
The protocol is attracting attention as investors seek blockchain-based alternatives to centralized AI infrastructure.
Thanks to reduced issuance, growing staking activity, and new regulated access points, TAO's recent price movement suggests that markets are reassessing the long-term positioning of this asset.
