The city was covered by the morning fog that crept slowly through the streets, and settled softly on the glass towers that reflected the sun. In one of these towers, a handful of engineers was having a meeting at length table. They were people that didn't show off or call for attention. Their work was their own universe.
Among them was a young architect named Lior. He was known for looking at diagrams to the point of seeing them in a different way, as if he only understood when he stopped forcing the meaning. Lior thought that lending and borrowing should not be considered as transactions which are simple; rather, they are relationships, each having its own flow and tension.
Outside, the world was very chaotic. Borrowers were having tough times in getting access that was fair, while lenders were feeling that they were too far from the assets they were putting to use. Liquidity behaved like a disoriented river, which in some places was flooding and in others, drying up. The result of each attempt to control it was a compromise: convenience without fairness, efficiency without clarity.
Lior’s plan was very unnoticeable, almost like a whisper. How about if lending could become the characteristic of each person involved? What if it didn't becloud the selection of scale or directness, accessibility or precision? To him, it was a design that didn't force one single structure but rather allowed the market to decide their equilibrium.
The system was called Morpho.
Its development was slow and gradual, initially, it was just a drawing of a plan, then programming code. There was no party when the system was eventually installed. The workers merely observed early users taking tentative steps with it, then, gradually, they were more assured.
Rates for borrowers were something that they actually caused as they moved toward their requirements. Lenders were the ones who found a new closeness; their money could still be in the form of liquid without being unidentifiable. The site was not demanding anyone's attention. Quite the opposite, it continued to be in operation, low-key changing itself as a river conforms to nature.
Individuals started paying attention to it. This was not because of the volume of Morpho but because of its durability. Here was a thing that had a feeling of purpose in a sector crowded with experiments that are too fast. It did not give the impression of changing the world that it was just acting as though the world is already worthy of better.
Long after that, Lior came to a co-working space where students were sharing their first experience of building on the Morpho platform. They were not talking about speculation, but rather structure, and the incentives which did not need any twisted interpretation for understanding. They conversed about transparency and how as far as being automated, systems can still be perceived as honest.
Lior was not among those that interrupted. He was listening and feeling thankful that a silent idea had created an opportunity for others to build without fear.
When he got back to the street, the same morning haze was still there hovering just above the skyline. The city was doing its work at the usual pace. But, underneath, there was another calmer current—one that Morpho had been instrumental in, bit by bit, until its arrival was taken for granted.
Certain designs make their presence known. Others, on the contrary, do not claim any kind of importance. They are simply doing the work.
