The US financial industry is changing radically: national US banks can now legally and officially buy and sell cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum on behalf of their customers.
What exactly did the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) announce?
-On December 9, 2025, the OCC issued Interpretive Letter 1188. With it, banks supervised by it gain the right to execute “riskless principal crypto-asset transactions” for their customers.
-In simple terms: The bank buys crypto, e.g. Bitcoin, from a counterparty and immediately resells it to its customer, without holding the crypto as its own "stock" .
This means that major US banks can now offer “buy me Bitcoin/Ethereum” services with the same security and regulation as a traditional mixed financial institution.
