Pakistan's digital currency reforms pave the way for CBDC to become legal tender
The Government of Pakistan has proposed amendments to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Act to recognize central bank digital currency (CBDC) as legal tender.
These changes will allow the central bank to issue, manage, and regulate digital currency in both digital and physical forms.
The amendments extend Section 24 to include digital issuance alongside traditional paper money, defining digital currency as "a form of digital money issued by the bank under Section 24 as legal tender under Section 25."
