About Zilliqa
Zilliqa is a blockchain ecosystem designed to facilitate the use of decentralized applications (dApps) at scale. Launched in 2017, Zilliqa is known as one of the first blockchain networks to implement sharding, which splits blockchain infrastructure into multiple fragmented networks as a scalability solution. ZIL is Zilliqa’s native token and is used within the Zilliqa ecosystem to transfer value, maintain network security, and facilitate the use of dApps. Zilliqa uses a unique programming language called Scilla to create and execute smart contracts and dApps.
Zilliqa’s sharding mechanism allows its network to process transactions extremely quickly. The Zilliqa network consists of multiple individual blockchains, referred to as shards. Each shard processes transactions, stores data, and adds new blocks to the shard chain, referred to as ‘microblocks’.
Microblocks are intermittently combined into a transaction block and committed to the main Zilliqa chain. The 2022 launch of the Zilliqa Metapolis Metaverse saw Zilliqa gain traction in the blockchain industry as a platform for brands and enterprises to access the Web3 economy.
