What is Axie Infinity (AXS)?
Axie Infinity is an online game universe that combines traditional gaming with blockchain technology, creating a large-scale play-to-earn (P2E) ecosystem. At the center of the game are digital creatures called Axies, which players can collect, battle, breed, and trade. Unlike conventional games, Axie Infinity allows players to own their in-game assets through non-fungible tokens (NFTs), giving them the ability to trade or sell these items freely on the open marketplace. Over time, the game has evolved into multiple versions, including Axie Infinity Classic and Axie Infinity Origins, both of which allow players to earn rewards through gameplay.
Gameplay begins once a player acquires three Axies, which serve as their team for battles and other activities. These Axies vary significantly in value depending on rarity, abilities, and traits, ranging from inexpensive “Floor Axies” to highly coveted Mystic Axies worth thousands of dollars. Since Axies are represented as NFTs, players maintain full custody of their assets, and each creature’s unique attributes are verifiable on the blockchain. Within the Axie Infinity universe, players earn in-game tokens, take part in strategic battles, and access various gameplay modes that generate rewards. Virtual land also plays a role through tokenized plots in Lunacia, the Axie homeland, where owners can gather resources, develop their land, and earn additional AXS rewards.
Axie Infinity was developed by Sky Mavis, a technology-driven game studio founded in 2018. The founding team includes Trung Thanh Nguyen, the CEO, who previously co-founded an e-commerce startup and has experience at Trusting Social and Anduin Transactions. Aleksander Leonard Larsen, the COO, who brings years of experience as a competitive gamer and blockchain strategist. Tu Doan, Art Director, who leads visual development and designed the original Axies. Andy Ho, the CTO, steers technical operations with prior experience at Google, PayPal, and Anduin Transactions. Jeffrey Zirlin, the Growth Lead, focuses on community expansion, token design, and product development.
A key component of the Axie ecosystem is the token economy built around Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) and Smooth Love Potion (SLP). SLP acts as a reward token earned through gameplay and can be used within the game economy or traded externally like other cryptocurrencies.
The AXS token is the native governance and utility token of Axie Infinity and plays a central role in the ecosystem. Holders can use AXS to participate in governance decisions, stake their tokens for rewards, and interact with various in-game systems. The token also supports long-term alignment between developers and the community by giving players a shared stake in the evolution of the Axie universe.
