It’s a profound reflection on the nature of existence and non-existence.
Epicurus argues that death is not something we actually experience. While we are alive, death is absent; it cannot touch or affect us. Conversely, when death comes, we no longer exist to experience it.
In other words, fear of death is irrational because it is impossible for death and consciousness to coexist. Fear often arises from imagining future pain or loss, but in the case of death, there is no self left to feel anything, so there is nothing to fear.
This perspective encourages us to shift our focus from fearing the inevitable to valuing the present. Epicurus reminds us that death is simply a boundary of experience, not a source of suffering for the living.
By understanding that our consciousness and death cannot overlap, we free ourselves from anxiety over the inevitable. Instead of fearing something that, by its very nature, cannot harm us while we exist, we can devote our energy to living fully and meaningfully in the time we do have.
