Steve Jobs was known for his obsession with perfection—not just in Apple products, but also in his cars, especially the Porsche 911. Jobs famously swapped his black Porsche every six months to avoid having a license plate.
In 1987, when billionaire Ross Perot was scheduled to visit NeXT, Jobs panicked. Perot was frugal, and Jobs feared that seeing him and Randy Adams driving Porsche 911 Turbos would make NeXT look too wealthy to need funding. Jobs rushed in and said: “Randy, we have to hide the Porsches!”
The plan worked—Perot invested $20 million, keeping NeXT alive. While NeXT never became a giant, Apple later acquired it for $400 million, which brought Jobs back to Apple. The NeXT software became the foundation for macOS and iOS, powering the iPhone and iPad today.
Sometimes, even a perfectionist has to bend the truth—without hiding those Porsches, the tech world might look very different today.
